Blue Jays On the Brink of Victory After Rookie Phenom Dominates Dodgers in Game 5

Trey Yesavage turned in a legendary performance and Davis Schneider launched a home run on the game's initial offering as the Blue Jays beat the Dodgers 6–1 on Wednesday, standing one win away of their first title since 1993.

A Rookie's Record-Setting Night

The young Yesavage, who made his major league debut in September, recorded 12 strikeouts and zero walks – achieving a historic World Series first. The first-year pitcher gave up only a single run on three hits in seven innings. His year commenced in the low minors with minimal fanfare, but has now earned two starting wins in the series in this best-of-seven series.

A Quick Start for Toronto

Toronto’s hitters provided early support. On the first pitch of the game, Schneider turned on a 97mph fastball and sent it over the left-field fence. Two pitches later, Vladimir Guerrero Jr followed with another blast to almost the exact same place. It marked the unprecedented occurrence in the World Series that consecutive home runs opened a game, shocking the spectators before most had found their seats.

Yesavage Takes Control

Yesavage then assumed command. He retired five straight via strikeout between the second and third innings, breaking a rookie pitching record before Hernández ended the run with a home run in the third inning to make it two to one. That was as close as Los Angeles would get.

Building the Advantage

In the fourth inning, Daulton Varsho tripled down the right-field line after a defensive mistake, and Clement delivered a sacrifice fly to plate the run for a 3–1 lead. The Dodgers' bats remained quiet from there. After a six-run output in an 18-inning game, they’ve produced just four runs in their last 29 innings.

Seventh-Inning Rally

The Dodgers starter battled through six and two-thirds innings but exited in the seventh after the bases were packed. The two inherited runners scored – via a wild pitch and one more on a base hit – to extend the lead to 5–1. A single in the eighth provided the concluding score.

Relievers Seal the Deal

Yesavage exited to a standing ovation from the traveling fans, and the relievers finished the job. The relief corps each tossed a shutout frame to close it out, recording three strikeouts together while maintaining the stellar start.

Dodgers' Lineup Shuffle Falters

The Dodgers, who adjusted their lineup in hopes of igniting the offense, again couldn't find momentum. Their key batter went without a hit in four trips and is now hitless in seven at-bats since a record-setting on-base performance in Game 3.

On the Verge of a Championship

Now leading the series three games to two, Toronto go back to their own stadium with two games to secure the title. The sixth game is set for Friday at Rogers Centre.
