This Irish Romance Cinema Critique: Intense LGBTQ+ Love Story Sparks Emotional Impact in Impressive First Feature

The Irish young adult romance starts authentically, taking place on Halloween in Dublin where Trinity College young people are partying in an abandoned building.

Athlete the male lead (Adam Lunnon-Collery) is talking to budding indie film-maker the other lead (a fresh talent); the dialogue is laidback and intense, fun and profound, reflecting genuine interaction.

“This is an act as an arrogant jock,” jokes the character.

The audience sees him facing teasing in the changing facility for getting his pierced ears. It’s easy to almost see his pounding in his chest talking to the love interest, identifying as transgender.

An Evening In the City

The pair spend the night drifting through the Dublin streets; they message a drug dealer to get sparklers instead of illegal substances and film each other with a old-school camera.

They face no interference from them. The feature is tender and charming before a sudden reveal – a twist that will require a real effort of your ability to suspend disbelief, bordering on clumsy.

Presence and Naturalism Elevate the Narrative

However the magnetism and lovely authentic delivery of performances from fresh faces the lead actor and Hannon makes it work. The male lead is particularly outstanding as his character, radiating friendliness and charm on the outside.

Recognition goes to the writing by new director the writer-director, which becomes increasingly interesting as the film goes on, bringing in concepts about remorse and the fallibility of memory.

Personal Perception and Guilt

The protagonist receives a shake to his sense of identity: his assurance in himself as the nice person, a friend to the vulnerable. He experiences a rush of guilt over a situation from his past, occurrences that he has altered in his recollection to take the sting out.

An impressive first film.
