British Foreign Office has added 11 further nations to its official warning roster about the risks of toxic alcohol toxicity from tainted beverages.

The updated travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a worldwide rise in the frequency of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol poisoning.

Only last month, the government had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, following several serious incidents such as the tragic death of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that as little as tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can cause blindness or death within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

Methanol is a harmful chemical often employed in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. It is not intended for drinking.

While it is inherently formed during the production of beverages, licensed producers bring it down to low, safe levels for drinking through the refining procedure.

Yet in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to cut costs, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to detect.

Authorities representative a senior official emphasized that all travellers should be aware of the symptoms of industrial alcohol toxicity.

"When you are consuming alcohol abroad, opt for trusted places and refrain from unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," the minister said.

"If something seems unusual, such as a hangover that's way worse than typical or sight issues – contact a doctor right away."

The full roster of nations identified as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
