Venezuela Launches Days of Military and Cyber Defense Exercises After American Strikes on Alleged Narcotics Vessels
Caracas has commenced a 72-hour period of defense operations on its Caribbean island of La Orchila as tensions soar amid American naval movements.
Rising Tensions in the Region
Units positioned for what the US government described as an anti-drug operation have destroyed at least several crafts and a total of several suspects reportedly smuggling illicit substances across the region this recently.
The attacks and a deployment of US warships in the region have raised fears of a potential military intervention in Caracas.
Venezuelan Reaction
The operation ordered by President Nicolás Maduro was named “Sovereign Caribbean”, stated Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López.
“We are deploying anti-air measures with armed drones, surveillance drones, underwater units... The operation includes cyber defense maneuvers,” he declared.
Public television showed video of amphibious vessels and military ships deployed off the island, where Caracas maintains a armed forces installation.
The armed forces stated the operations would involve multiple naval units, 22 aircraft and multiple craft from the “special naval militia”.
Background and Claims
The territory is adjacent to the zone where the American forces seized and controlled a Venezuelan fishing vessel for eight hours over the past few days.
The leader, whose last two elections were not recognized by the United States and many other countries, has sworn that the government will resist any aggression against what he labeled US “hostility” against his country.
American authorities is offering a financial incentive for the capture of Maduro, who is charged with illegal drug allegations.
Denials and Counterclaims
The government has called for an investigation of a Washington-led operation on an suspected drug boat recently that claimed the lives of over a dozen persons.
The incident was one of three Venezuelan vessels that American leader Donald Trump said his nation had “eliminated” without offering evidence.
“There is no proof, because they say it carried drugs but who saw the drugs?”, remarked the government representative.
The official stated publicly that authorities had intercepted more than a significant amount of drugs so far this 2025.
“It is the largest amount that has been seized since over a decade ago,” noted the official, who – along with the president and other high-ranking figures – is under US sanctions.
US Justification
The American leader has explained armed interventions by stating on public platforms that “dangerous narcotics networks POSE A THREAT to American safety, international relations, and crucial objectives”.
American authorities has shared recordings of these operations and claims it has irrefutable evidence that the victims were narcotics smugglers, without sharing additional data to support the allegations.
Venezuela has always refuted being a trafficking hub.
